KNOWLTON, JOSEPH L.  --------  FIRST LIEUTENANT  ARTILLERY  United States Army
Btry B, 6th BN, 29TH ARTY,4th Inf Div, APO 96265
Awarded:  Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device
Date action:  20 January 1968
Theater:  Republic of Vietnam
Reason:  For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam.
Lieutenant Knowlton distinguished himself while serving as an Artillery Forward Observer with Battery
                B, 6th Battalion, 29th Artillery, and attached to Company C, 3d Battalion, 12th Infantry, 4th Infantry
Division. On 20 January 1968, Company C made contact with a large North Vietnamese Army force.
During the ensuing engagement, Lieutenant Knowlton, with complete disregard for his own safety,
continually exposed himself while administering medical aid to the wounded and directing artillery fire
upon the hostile force. While rendering aid to the wounded, he directed effective counter-fire against
enemy snipers, providing protective cover for the safe evacuation of casualties. His effective artillery
adjustment throughout the battle prevented the occurrence of many friendly casualties and provided
outstanding support for the company as it maneuvered against the insurgents. Lieutenant Knowlton's
personal bravery, expert direction of artillery fire and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the
highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United
