DIXIE WAS ADOPTED MAY 30, 2001!

UPDATE:  April 16, 2002
Dixie's family submitted the following to the Petfinder "Happy Tails" Contest:
Dixie came into our lives at the end of May 2001. The first few weeks were rough on all of us. Dixie had spent most of her life in an animal shelter, then in a foster home. When she was brought to our home for a trial weekend, she was very scared and confused.  She missed her foster mom and didn't want to have anything to do with anyone of us in the house. Dixie and our other dog, Freddie, got a long ok. But our cat, Ninja, didn't want her in the house and made this known to everyone.  Ninja and Dixie were constantly fighting and Dixie was constantly bothering the parkeet.  Luckily, she never knocked the cage over. For a few days, I didn't think it was going to work out, but it did. After a few weeks of a lot of love, patience, understanding and prayers, it just seemed like all of a sudden, everything worked out. Dixie and Ninja now have an understanding and Dixie doesn't even look at the parkeet. Dixie is a wonderful, sweet, loving dog. She is very devoted to everyone in the house, loves to go for walks and insists on going to bed at 11 PM every night. She likes lying on the pinic table to sun herself. She loves playing with her dog toys, which are all over the house. I have always adopted from animal shelters and people need to know that there are really some wonderful, sweet, loving pets that are just waiting for that special person/family to come along to adopt them. If you have a lot of love, patience and understanding, almost anyone can find their perfect pet, right at their local animal shelter.

UPDATE - 1 1/2 months after Dixie was adopted...
Here are a few pictures of Dixie. Sorry it took awhile to send them to you. Dixie has adjusted very well in the pass month and a half. She is one of the happiest and energetic dogs that I have ever owned. It amazes us where she gets all of her energy. She runs and plays from the time she gets up to the time she goes to sleep at night.  She always has some kind of toy in her mouth, the only time she doesn't is when she is eating or drinking water. Thanks again for sending Dixie to us.

UPDATE:
Note:  Dixie had a couple of rough days early on in her new home.  She was in a panic and kept trying to escape.  Her foster home was the only home she had probably ever known.  Her world had been turned upside down.  Would she understand that although a foster home is better than the shelter, it still isn't the same as a real forever home?  Shortly, though, with the love and patience of the wonderful family who adopted her, Dixie realized she was where she belonged...

"Dixie is still sore from her spay surgery and she spent Tuesday sleeping. Today she was more alert and she has started to get her appetite back. She was a big hit at the vet's. The doctor and his assistants all said she was such a sweet dog during her hospital stay.  At night, she sleeps in our bedroom with our other dog, Freddie. Dixie has become quite a little lady and a real joy to have around. You can't help but 'fall in love' with her."

DIXIE'S STORY:
Dixie is about 5-6 years old and only weighs around 40 pounds.  She was young when she was found as a stray and turned in at a shelter.  What we saw when we met her at the shelter was a very sweet, kind a loving dog.  It wasn't until we were signing paperwork to have her released to us that we learned Dixie had lived at the shelter for almost 5 (yes, FIVE) years!  The staff told us she had not been put down because everyone liked her so much.  If you really want to make a difference in a dog's life, then Dixie is the girl for you.  She is one dog that will certainly appreciate living in real home at long last!  She will worship the people who take her in and treat her as a family member.

Dixie has adjusted extremely well to living back in the real world!  She crates very well and loves to play with stuffed toys.  She is not at all stressed about her "new" circumstances.  If fact, she is enjoying herself immensely!
