Like her brothers and sisters, Auntie Emmy seems to have acquired a strong sense of duty to her husband and children. 'Nette describes her mother as "a loving and kind mother, soft-spoken and not very talkative". When the children were young, she patiently sewed all their school clothes. As they moved out on their own and Mama and Porpoi began to "get up in age", she spent a great deal of time caring for them along with Papi (Stanley) who lived nearby...this even though someone had been hired to stay with Grandma. After her husband died, Auntie Emmy did not mind moving from the familiar surroundings of Brewer's Bay to help raise her grandchildren. Everyone can care for themselves now, and she lives with her youngest daugther Gretel on St. John.
