The Nibbs Family
Nathaniel Nibbs

Little is remembered of Uncle Nathaniel.  As a young man, he is remembered as kind - giving his younger brothers and sisters small amounts of his small change from time to time.  Apparently triggered in part by ongoing differences with his father, as a young man he traveled to Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic).  There he lived and worked for several years.

Supposedly ill, however, he apparently thought it best to return home.  He booked a passage on the schooner 'Fancy Me'.  The trip took approximately three days.  On the way home, his condition worsened.  He died.  Of necessity, his lifeless body was thrown overboard.

When the schooner arrived, the family was advised of the tragic news.  Mama traveled to Road Town collect his small suitcase from the boat.  Among his personal belongings was a photograph.

In the photograph, he is vividly remembered by brothers and sisiters and by some of the grandchildren who lived or visited Mama as wearing a cap.  After Mama's death, it is possible that the original picture (and a copy) may have been inadvertently destroyed or lost.  We hope that this photograph turns up some where in the family.  It is the only one known to exist of Uncle Nathaniel.
