Advance Return of Dependents (AROD)
Purpose
- Advance return of dependents must be applied judiciously and only as a last resort. Every attempt to used local facilities should be exhausted.
- An AROD should not be approved if requested do to:
- Soldier deploying or going TDY. Use the Family Care Plan instead. All expenses are the responsibility of the soldier.
- Soldier who have received PCS orders and wants to move the family prior to PCS may send their dependents to the next duty station by doing an Early Return of Dependents (no paper work needed, just go to housing, transportation, and travel).
- The request for advance return of dependents may be provided only when a valid need for the dependents return exist. Supporting documentation from the reason should be obtained from the appropriate person or agencies outside the chain of command (chaplain, mental health clinic, financial management, family counseling, legal agencies, etc).
- Upon receipt of the AROD orders the soldier's dependents have 90 days to leave the overseas command.
- Once a soldier's request for advance return of dependents is approved and the soldiers dependents return to the states, the soldiers' tour does not change from 36 months to 24 months (AR 614-30, chap 4.3, ParaB1)
