STRADE FRIARY

Map Reference: M260977

The MacJordan clan founded a monastery at Strade for the Franciscans in the early 13th century. It was transferred to the Dominicans in 1252. The chancel of the church is 13th century but the rest of the building appears to be 15th century work. The main item of interest in the church is the sculptured 15th century tomb in the N wall of the chancel. This has a magnificent traceried hood and finely carved weepers. These include the Magi and SS Peter & Paul. There is another 15th century tomb under the E window.
