CLONES HIGH CROSS

St Tighernach founded a monastery at Clones in the 6th century. The High Cross is composed of fragments of two sandstone cross, the head is much too small for the shaft. On the W face is the Fall of Man, the Sacrifice of Isaac and Daniel in the Lions' Den. On the E face is the Adoration of the Magi, the Marriage Feast of Cana, the Miracle of the Loaves & Fishes, and the Crucifixion. Other panels on the narrow sides have geometrical decoration.

CLONES MONASTIC SITE

In the old graveyard at Clones there is a Round Tower and a church-shaped tomb. The Round Tower is about 23m high. The doorway is about 1.6m above the present ground level and is about 1.6m high by 60cm wide. It has inclined jambs. The tomb is made from two large stones and features an inscription. There a finial-shaped ends. One gable features a greatly weathered figure with outstretched arms. In the graveyard is a large collection of mid-18th century gravestones. These are generally round or oval with small projections and resemble a small unpierced ring-headed cross. There is the usual memorial inscription on one side and the other side features symbols of mortality. Around a large, central skull-and-crossbones are grouped the hourglass, coffin and bell.

DONAGH GRAVEYARD

This small cross is 140cm high and is set on a modern base. It has an unpierced ring decorated with a dog-tooth design in relief. On one face is a simple Crucifixion. The graveyard contains some very fine 18th century gravestones.

EDERGOLE COURT TOMB

Map Reference: H614196

This is a possible court tomb incorporated into a field boundary. At the E end of a 7.5m gallery are two portal stones surmounted by a large lintel. There is no trace of the northern arm of the court and the southern is masked by the boundary fence.

GARRAN PORTAL TOMB

Map Reference: H967257

This portal tomb has a chamber measurng 2m by 1m. It has two portal stones, two side stones on either side and a back stone. The large capstone has been displaced and leans against one of the sidestones.

LISNADARRAGH WEDGE TOMB

Map Reference: H724077

This wedge tomb has a gallery about 4.5m long and 2m wide. It is aligned approximately NE-SW and is flanked on either side by outer walling which extends a short distance beyond the SW end.
