which was backed by the U. S. A.
Saudi Arabia placed an embargo on oil.
The Arab states, led by Saudi Arabia, reduced oil
production by 5% per month.
Saudi Arabia declared an embargo against the U. S
Oil exporters joined the embargo on countries
supporting Israel.
The global price of oil rose 300 per cent.
In the U. S., the price of regular petrol sold
by petrol stations to motorists rose from $0.12 /
$0.18 per gallon to $1.50 in a few months.

Nixon was elected in 1968 and re-elected in 1972.
Scandals blew up around Nixon in mid-1972 and persisted into 1974. His vice-president was forced to resign. Numerous cabinet
members were forced to resign. An in-law was caught
in a financial scandal.
Congress impeached Nixon, for obstruction of justice, abuse of power and contempt of Congress in 1974.
Because Nixon could not count on the support of his party in Congress he resigned.
