on a visit to the city of Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was controlled by Austria and
Hungary, Archduke Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife were shot and killed by a Bosnian Serb, Gavrilo
Princip, on 28 June 1914. Princip was one of many Slavs who wanted the southern Slavic provinces of Austria-Hungary to form a
separate country (eventually,
in 1918, Yugoslavia). Princips died in prison from an illness in 1918.

Poets fostered the common belief that the Great War was a futile conflict,
a waste of life, a tragedy for Britain, and led to the rise of Hitler and the Second World War.
In truth, the First World War was unavoidable. The Germans intended to seize
territory and dominate Europe. After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Germany encouraged the Austrians to invade
Serbia.
Once the Germans invaded France through Belgium, the British, guarantor of Belgium’s

Lusitania
In 1915, a German submarine torpedoed a
British passenger ship, the RMS Lusitania, off the Irish coast, and claimed the Cunard ocean liner was carrying
arms from neutral America for the enemy British. 1,195 passengers, including 129 Americans, perished.
The sinking of the Lusitania by the Germans was one of many such incidents that eventually caused the Americans
to join the war against the Germans in 1917.

In March 1917, the Germans and the French
faced each other on the Western front with neither side gaining ground against the other.
The Germans feared the American entry in
the war would tip the balance in favor of the French.
To defeat the French the Germans needed
more manpower. The Germans were fighting a two-front war. Thus, the Germans could defeat neither the Russians in the east
nor the French in the west.
If the Germans could end the war with the
Russians in the east they could move their army from the eastern front to the western front and mount a successful offensive
against the French before the Americans would be ready to fight.
Unable to push the German armies out
of Russia and control a revolution at home, the Czar of Russia abdicated in February/March 1917.
In the new government in Russia, Kerensky
was intent on pursuing the war against the Germans.
So the Germans decided to send the Bolshevik
revolutionary Lenin, who wanted an end to the war in order to pursue revolution in Russia, back to Russia
from his exile in Switzerland in the hope that he would topple the Russian government and agree to an armistice with Germany.

The Communist Revolution in Russia in October 1917 ended the Russian monarchy and the Romanov dynasty.
In March 1918, Lenin, head of the government, made peace with the Germans and ended the war on Germany's eastern front.
In a long civil war that followed the revolution, Russian Czarist/Imperial troops ('White Russians') fought the Soviet
(Red) Army in an attempt to retake Russia.
The defeat of Germany and the Armistice of November 1918 ended the Great War in western Europe.
Soviet leaders in Moscow - Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin - ordered the Red Army to retake lands conquered by the Germans and
to push east through the three Baltic States, Poland, Hungary, Austria and Germany, and south through the Ukraine, to support
local communist revolutions and establish local communist governments.
The western allies sent forces to Russia to back Imperial forces against the Red Army.

The Poles stopped the Red Army in Warsaw in 1920, ending Russian plans to take over eastern and central Europe by force.
The Poles and the Soviets took large slices from the Ukraine before the Soviets incorporated it into the USSR in 1922.
By 1923, the Red Army had prevailed in Russia, the Imperial forces were defeated and the western powers withdrew their
troops from Russia.
