"Preparing" for Tests (Study Skills) Ask or anticipate what material will be covered on the test and write it down. Listen for verbal "clues" from your teacher. Ex. "Be sure to remember..." Pay attention to what is written on the board (copy it down). Ask, "Will this be on the test?" Find out what type of questions will be on the test. Use a different study technique for an essay test as compared to fill-in-the-blank. Look at past tests to discover your teacher's usual test format. Listen (or ask) for sample questions from your teachers. Use any study guides. Pay attention to the kinds of activities you do daily in class; the test may be similar. Discover how much of the test is based on your notes. Consider your teacher's attitude about note taking -- is it required or optional. It's a clue to whether he or she will test material based on notes. Ask your teacher's if you will be tested on "in-class notes". Analyze previous tests to determine how much material was taken from notes. Organize your notes and other study aids to go with the material you believe will be covered and the type of test to be given. Gather the material you feel might be on the test (notes, ch. review, problems, etc.) Highlight in your notes the key points that might be covered. Use margin notes (key words written in the margins) to identify main points. Avoid cramming. Keep in mind that it takes time to process material, so begin reviewing the material three to six days prior to the test. Skim through the material the first night. After skimming, read margin notes, and recite important notes aloud as you read them. Read the margin notes and w/o looking at your notes/text, recite the important points. After skimming, reading, and reciting, make up a sample test and answer the questions; or have someone quiz you. Prepare yourself the night before the test. Briefly review the material one more time (don't cram). Get adequate sleep. Prepare yourself the next day. Briefly review the material one more time when you wake up. Eat a nutritious breakfast (not donuts, chips, candy, and a soda). Get your mind and body warmed up with a brief exercise. Wear something comfortable that makes you feel confident. Build your self-confidence (tell yourself you have prepared well; keep a good attitude all day).
