Effective Communicators of Oral Language Rubric
Modern World History - 10th Grade
Mr. Salinas

Standard: Students will articulate ideas and express significant messages to others in a clear, creative, and effective manner.


Exemplary (excellent) Achievement
-Student clearly and effectively communicates the main ideas or theme, including an ability to answer questions with ease.
-Presentation is very "geared" toward the particular audience and setting.
-The presentation has an "engaging" introduction and creative method of "hooking" the audience.
-Speaker shows confidence in posture, eye contact, and movement.
-Visuals are professional and creative, effectively expressing ideas and information.

Competent (strong) Achievement
-Student clearly and effectively communicates the main ideas or theme, including an ability to answer questions with ease.
-Presentation is "geared" toward the particular audience and setting.
-A basic "hook" is used to engage the audience.
-Speaker is in control, but not obviously confident with their posture, eye contact, and movement.
-Visuals are neat and help express ideas and information.

Evidence of Satisfactory Achievement
-Student demonstrates a basic understanding of the subject, although a deep mastery of the topic is lacking. Some questions are answered.
-Presentation is "geared" somewhat appropriately to the audience and setting.
-Includes an introduction, but no "hook" for the audience.
-Speaker is visibly nervous, but gets through the presentation adequately.
-Visuals are used, but they are not effectively integrated into the presentation.

Needs Improvement
-Student shows very little understanding of the subject, and has trouble expressing ideas and answering questions.
-Presentation is not "geared" appropriately to the particular audience and setting.
-No introduction or "hook".
-Speaker does not practice positive posture, eye contact, or movements.
-Visuals are ineffective and appear as separate from the oral presentation.
