Second Year Off Treatment
September 17th, 2002.....
Well we had a record appointment today. We were in and out of the hospital in 45mins... it was amazing. Michael has gained almost a kg in 2 months. He now weights 29.6kg and is 133.5 cm tall. So he has grown a bit. I assumed so because all his jeans were too short....
His bloodwork was great...
wbc 6.37, hgb 132, neutro-polys 2.78, monocytes .43 and his platelets were 180
A friend of mine came with us as we combined a shopping trip in Ottawa with Michael's appointment.... we had alot of fun. Michael was very mature and very well behaved. We went to a chinese food restaurant and I was amazed to watch how much Michael ate. His appetite has definitely come back to normal. He must be in the middle of another growth spurt...maybe I won't buy him too many new clothes then eh?
We went to visit the floor where Michael stayed when he was sick.. there was only 2 nurses and 2 doctors he knew there and of course the cleaning staff. It is so nice to take him back to the place where he was so sick when he is well but kind of sad that no familiar faces are there... it is just a prime example of how time goes on.
This photo was taken on July 24th.... Mr. Show-off........
Our next appointment at Cheo is November 12th.........
January 16th, 2003...
Well I guess I haven't really been keeping up to date with this website .... no news is good news. Michael is doing very well.
We went to our local doctors office instead of our 2mth cheo visit because we were anticipating a January snow storm and it wasn't worth the chance on the highway... as it turns out weather was great but extremely cold reaching the lows of -30 degrees celcius.... brrrrrrr..
Everything went perfectly well at the doctors... His bloodwork was......
wbc 4.44, hgb 141, platlets 220, neutrophils 1.65, and monocytes .31
He now weights 67lbs and is basically the same height...... growing like a bad weed.
Michael doesn't have any health issues other than normal colds that all children get this time of year. We all got our flu needles again this year just to be safe. Michael still has issues in school, at times he finds things difficult but not very often this year. We asked the school to hold him back in grade 2 again this year so that he could have a chance to catch up to the other children. At the beginning of the school year he entered an Early Literacy Program where it was planned that he would remain there until the end of this school year and possibly into the the next school year. As it turns out, Michael just began to flourish in the reading program and just before Christmas he graduated from the program as he is far to advanced for the rest of the children. There was nothing new that the course could offer him. Everyone was so surprised , Michael included, at how well he did in the program. He is now reading early chapter books with next to no difficulty. His frustration level has also now lowered due to the fact that he can now READ..... :o)
He repeated his Neurophsc. testing this December and we should have those results in February sometime and we can't wait to see how much he has progressed.
We are very happy with how Michael is doing and it is very hard for us to believe at this point that it was 4 years ago that he was diagnosed with Leukemia... it was a long hard road but we made it and we definitely are a changed family now but I would like to think it is for the better.... :o)
I have put a recent photo of the kids on New Years Eve this year.... we stayed up and played games with the kids until 2003!!!!!
Our next appt. isn't until March 5th at cheo in Ottawa......
