Colonial Development

New York
First the Dutch established New Amsterdam. Then the English wanted the harbor so they sent their navy, took it, and renamed it New York. The Indians sold Manhattan Island for $24. But, it wasn't theirs to sell - they sold it to six different groups of people!

Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania means Penn's Woods. William Penn, got it from his dad, who got it from Charles II (the Merry Monarch). Pennsylvania was established by Quakers. Quakers thought that people should believe inwardly, and did not need the guidance of a church or clergy. The rejected war, didn't like slavery, and wanted religious toleration.

Native Americans sign a treaty with William Penn. Penn purchased land from the Indians to establish his new colony, even though the King of England had already given him legal title to the land.

Penn was a nice person. There was religious and political freedom, and they were nice to Indians. Penn bought land from them; he didn't steal it. Many people came from all over to live there. That's why Philly (Philadelphia) is called the "City of Brotherly Love."

In 1681, Penn wrote to the Indians from England:
"My Friends, I have great love and regard towards you, and I desire to win and gain your love and friendship by a kind, just and peaceable life."

Maryland and the Carolinas
Maryland was named for Henrietta Maria, the wife of Charles I. The Carolinas were named after the Latin of Charles (Carolinus). Problems between farmers led to North and South Carolina.

Georgia
Georgia was named for King George II. Georgia was established as a debtors' colony.

One-room colonial schools were dark and cramped, and students sat on plank benches. Those near the fire roasted, and pupils in the far corners endured blue noses, chattering jaws and aching toes.

How Some Other New England Colonies Started
Other colonies were started by people who were banished. Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. Roger Williams, eventually Anne Hutchinson, established the first truly religiously free colony.

New England white pines made the best ship masts in the world. To officials in London, this was the most vital commodity that the American colonies offered. In 1644, one felled tree measuring 35 inches in diameter was worth £115 - three times the cost of a house in Boston.
