[More on Battle up above section - Guy]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are 1023 battle combinations in this mode. I've spent
around 9 hours to finish just 300 of them. That's about 3/10....

To choose the battle you wish, simply enter the numbers BACKWARDS from
the code chart. For example, to start battle 10 (battle with the quick
repair version of XATM092 =), Enter 0, 1, and Start (last option).
Battle numbers that are higher than 99 doesn't have a "start" option.
Example, to start battle 358, enter 8, 5, 3, and 0. Notice that 0358 is
the same as 358.

Since I haven't finished the game yet ("stuck" in the middle of disc 2),
some locations are marked as "Unknown".

Eventually, I will finish all of them in the next 2 weeks....

Location 4a:

Zell

Laguna Soldier Selphie

Quistis Rinoa Mystery Woman

Zell's Options:

????10-21: Seems that this one lets you reform your party. Seifer, Edea
are here too. Seifer and Edea are at the levels they were at when you
were with them previously (ex: Seifer Lv 10... makes sense doesn't it?)
this option is darkened out but you can still select it.

????-X(Zell?): Hmm.. if you choose this one, Zell will be the leader of
your party with Edea, and Selphie. You'll be in Esthar (on the spherical
elevator.. it will land). Also, if you check your main menu, Seifer will
be in your party at the bottom (where the inactive members
are). I think this takes you to the point in the game where you're
supposed to fight Pandora in the three attack spots.

????-X: Same as the above option except Squall is the leader of the
party.

???? ???1: The next screen you will see is the transfer screen. This
looks similar to the PHS but shows an arrow showing which character is
transfered with who. After an event will be shown in Esthar. This event
is takes place where Elone was held captive. One person have some
dialog and walks around the room (continuously... it repeats). Nothing
else.

???? ???2: Shows the begining of the scene where Laguna rescues Elone.
But he continues to run against the glass wall. Ha ha ha. It's pretty
funny. Well, nothing else here.

???? ??: Brings up a computer-generated map of Esthar. This is the
debriefing on the mission where Pandora attacks the three points in
Esthar. You party will then be put in Esthar near the blue glass wall
where Elone was held captive.

???? ???: Same as above except you don't have to see the computer map.
Your party will just be placed in the same area.

??? ????: One of Laguna's Scenarios. The scenario where you're supposed
to save Elone on Disc 3. You'll be positioned in front of the elevator.
Note: You'll have all the equipment you've gained thus far --- which
includes GF's you didn't have when you first played this scenario!

??? ???????: You'll end up in the area with the glass wall where Elone
is held captive. The only difference is that your party consists of
Laguna, Kiros, and Ward.

????? ???: Your current party will be teleported to the room right
outside the room where Elone was jailed in.

????? ?????: Same as above except a guy is missing in the next room.

????? ????: You current party will be teleported to the room right
outside the room where Elone was jailed in.

Laguna's Options:

????-: Laguna's Scenario where he meets Julia. You are located right
outside near the save point. Of course your party is Laguna, Kiros, and
Ward in their military uniforms.

???? ??-(?): Same as above except you're control of only Laguna.

???? ??-(?): Same as above.

[Blank Option]: Screen turns black. Game freeze. Nothing else here.

Quistis's Options(Songs... don't know the names to them though):

[Darkened out option]: Hmmm... dunno what this does. Nothing happened
when I selected it. I'm betting it means cancel

????:

????: The song Julia plays in Laguna's scenario

????: Dance/SeeD Ball Theme

????: SeeD Training Zone Theme

????: Overworld Theme

????: Ocean sounds with birds in the background

????:

????: Wind blowing

????: Birds chirping

[Blank]:

Rinoa's Options:

Cancel

????: Takes your party to the train track in Fisherman's Horizon (a draw
point is nearby)

????: Fisherman's Horizon. The scene where Squall is carrying Rinoa on
his back.

????: Another scene at Fisherman's Horizon. This continues where the
above left off...

????: Another scene at Fisherman's Horizon. Squall (while carrying Rinoa
on his back) talks to the party

????: Same area as above, except you are in control of your party which
includes Zell, Edea, and Selphie.

????: One of Laguna's Scenarios. This one takes place at the Lunatic
Pandora Research Center. What's strange here is you are in control of
Laguna but when you check your menu, nobody's in your party! What's even
more strange is that all of your party members (including Seifer and
Edea) are in the inactive list which overlaps the bottom half of the
screen!!

????: You're back at Esthar but before the event where monsters have
broken loose. You are in control of the party the you had before and
both Seifer and Edea are on your inactive list!

Mystery Woman's Options:

Cancel

????1: Scene here you are in a hovercar at Esthar

????1: Your current party starts where the above scene left off

????1: Your party starts at the front entrance of Esthar

????2: Shows the FMV when you enter (elevator) in Esthar

Zell??2: Same as above except Zell is the party leader and Edea is in
your party along with your other member

???1: Attack spot #1 during the Lunatic Pandora event (warning! the game
doesn't give you time to finish it!)

???2: Attack spot #2 during the Lunatic Pandora event (warning! the game
doesn't give you time to finish it!)

???3: Attack spot #3 during the Lunatic Pandora event (warning! the game
doesn't give you time to finish it!)

????: Your party is 'floating' above the ground near the entrance to the
airport at Esthar--- before the monster attack... by the way, your party
is stuck here.

????: Party is at the Esthar Shopping Center (before the monster attack)

????: You party is inside the Esthar main building (before monster
attack)

????: Same as above

[Press Down one more time... arrow disappears then press circle]: Party
rides the circular elevator down from the main building at Esthar

Selphie's Options:

Cancel

????: Your current party is teleported to the bar where Julia met Laguna
(outside near save point)

????: Your current party is teleported to the bedroom where Laguna and
Julia had their little 'chat' :)

MD?4-1: Screen turns black then freezes

MD?4-2: Screen turns black then freezes

MD?4-3: Screen turns black then freezes

????: Screen turns black then freezes

????: Screen turns black then freezes

Guard's Options (Center):

Cancel

PHS: Yep, it's just as it sounds! You get to change party members and
Seifer and Edea are even there too!

MD?: Nothing happens

????: Nothing happens

????: Nothing happens

??->: Party transfer... Squall's stats to Laguna's an so on... once you
do, your party will be Laguna, Kiros & Ward (but why are they holding
their arms out... like they're crucified or something??!). Notice that
your main menu is empty!

????: Nothing happens

FH??: Nothing happens

????: Nothing happens

????: Nothing happens

????: Nothing happens

??->: Resets the screen but you're stuck...

No random battles
Use the following methods to never have any random battle outside of towns: rent a car for 3,500 gil, walk on train tracks, walk on paved roads, or get Diablos' No Encounter ability.

Free Potions
You can get free Potions in Timber Town. Get Rinoa in the party, then go to the bridge where you saw the guards. Keep returning until a man appears. Talk to him, then talk to him a second time to receive a Potion. Leave the screen and return until he appears again and repeat.

Easy Ability Points
Go to Cactaur Island and earn 20 AP for each Cactaur that is defeated in battle. Cactaur Island is the small island covered by a desert.

Easy Experience Points
Display the world map and travel to the left-most island. It contains powerful monsters that can easily level up your characters after battles.

SeeD written test answers
After the assault on Dollet, a "Test" option will become available. Use the following answers to the corresponding test level to answer all questions correctly and raise Squall's SeeD ranking. The higher Squall's ranking, the more cash he will receive each pay period.

Guardian Force locations
Quezacotl, Shiva
Squall's desk computer.

Ifrit
Defeat Ifrit.

Siren
Draw from Monster after fighting Biggs and Wedge.

Brothers
Defeat Sacred and Minotaur in Tomb Of The Unknown King.

Diablos
Before going to Timber, talk to headmaster Cid until you get the Magic Lamp. Save the game, use the lamp, and defeat Diablos. Draw and store Demi then cast it. Do not draw and immediately cast, as he will not cast Curaga on your character.

Carbuncle
Draw from Statues attacking Rinoa at end of Disc 1.

Leviathan
Draw from NORG after destroying his pod.

Pandemona
Draw from Fuijin in the battle with Fuijin and Raijin.

Cerberus
Draw from Cerberus during the Galbadia Garden invasion. He is at the center glowing circle near the entrance.

Bahamut
Go to the island in lower left corner of the map. Walk only when light is not flashing. Go straight until the message "you have perceived the resonance" appears. Go to opening at flashing object, fight Ruby Dragon (you have no choice). If you are in bad shape, answer "Yeah, there's nothing we can do". If not, answer "Never". With luck, Ruby Dragon will not use its Breath attack, as your characters will die. When you win, select "Cancel", then "Accept". Watch out for Bahamut's Mega Flare.

Tonberry
Defeat Odin. Then fight 20 Tonberrys at top of elevator or open place, not at torch lit place at its base. You will fight the Tonberry King.

Cactuar
Use Ragnarok to fly to the island on the outside of a desert; you will see a cactus teleporting around. Walk up to it. Be careful, as its 10,000 needles do 100,000 damage.

Doom Train
Get the Solomon Ring from the Esthar Sorceress Memorial at end of Disc 3. Laguna will have talked about defeating Ultimicia. You need six steel pipes and other items. He will appear without a fight.

Eden
Draw from Ultima Weapon. Bahamut must have already been defeated. Give one pressure spot all the time you can. If you do not, reset at the first steam pressure spot, put Zell in you party and let him "tinker" with the machine demanding four pressure; you will get away. Since you lose four pressure the first time you reset, it is as if you did not make a mistake (only, a lot of strong monsters will flood the area). Set the Move/Find ability to find the final save spot.

3. Heath Peninsula, east of Trabia Garden
4. Kashkabald Desert
After sighting all four, fly the Ragnarok to the rocky cliffs above the Chocobo Shrine. Encounter a UFO and defeat it. Then, head to the crater where Balamb Garden used to be. You will encounter a PuPu. Feed him five elixirs and you will be rewarded. Its only a level 5 card, but is definitely the hardest card to find.

Virtually Unlimited Gil

Readers who've seen our Most Idiotic Cheats department (below) know of a really slow, really stupid way of gaining an unlimited amount of gil. However, an actually-working unlimited supply of gil trick has been found, which can earn you from over 100,000 to 300,000 gil almost instantly. It involves buying items at a low price (with GF Tonberry's Haggle skill), refining them into more expensive items, and selling them at a higher price (with GF Tonberry's Sell High skill). You'll have to be quite late in the game, though, with these skills at hand. But if you want to know how to do it, jump on over to the Item Trading page, which tells you all about it.

Tons of Rare Items!

So far, this is the only really useful, effective cheat there is in Final Fantasy VIII. Unfortunately, you can do it only with the PC version of the game.

The PC version comes with the Chocobo World Mini-Game so players in the United States and elsewhere can finally get a taste of what was on the PocketStation. In it, you play as a Chicobo, who can fight enemies and pick up rare items that aren't available within the actual game. This cheat allows you to get as many of these rare items as you want.

First, pick up at least four or five of the A or B items (the rarest item types) in ChocoboWorld. Keep ChocoboWorld open, and enter Final Fantasy VIII. Transfer your Chicobo into the game to get the rare items.

Now, simply press Alt-Tab to switch back into ChocoboWorld, and press Control twice to turn the map on and off. This automatically saves the rare items (ChocoboWorld still thinks you have them) over the save file. You can then Alt-Tab back into Final Fantasy VIII and retransfer the items. Since the items are randomly generated, you can obtain four of five of any rare item in this way! You can continuously press Alt-Tab to switch between ChocoboWorld and Final Fantasy VIII, so as long as ChocoboWorld stays open, you won't lose those rare items.

If you would like to keep the save for future use, though, you can find the save file in the ChocoboWorld directory and copy it out into another location. This way you can keep a backup of your rare items, so you can transfer them into Final Fantasy VIII at any time.

Free Limit Break

I had to add this one because many, many people swear on their lives that this is an actual cheat. The only reason why it's not a myth is because potentially, this is true. Here's how it works:

A limit break usually happens a character has very low HP. However, if you fill up everyone's time bar and keep tapping Circle repeatedly to switch between them, one of them will receive a limit break even if he is at full HP. Thus you can use limit breaks at any time.

But! While it is true that limit breaks will come up even if characters still have most of their HP left, it is random, and will almost never occur. In one battle, I tapped Circle continuously for several minutes and nothing happened.

Be warned that while it can work, the chances of you getting anywhere with it is very, very low. In fact, if you tapped Circle for five minutes in hopes of getting the limit break, your character will get it only because he gets extremely hurt during that time! The bottom line is, it's not worth your time, and anyone who's trying to say it's an actual cheat is either trying to show off or just plain lucky to get it to work.

This just in: A question arose regarding usefulness of this trick: could status effects let the chances of the limit break occur more often, regardless of health level? In other words, would it be possible to gain many limit breaks if your characters had things like Poison on them?

The Most Idiotic Cheats In the World

Again, to point out the lack of actual cheats in the game, there are some cheats that even most people recognize as incredibly stupid, but that they are "cheats" nontheless. Well, ever want unlimited gil or unlimited potions? Well, here's how to do it! Just make sure you've got tons of extra time and absolutely no life anymore.

Unlimited Free Potions
In Timber, there's a man standing on a bridge above three train tracks who seem to become a little flustered every time you talk to him while Rinoa is in your party. Because of this, he gives you a Potion and quickly escapes. You can then leave the screen, return, and there he is again! Repeat for an endless amount of Potions! Obviously, you'd want to do this instead of actually buying them in bulk at a nearby store.

Unlimited Gil
In Disc 3, when Edea gives you the "Sorceress' Letter" item to give to the people at Lunar Base, you can take it to any store and sell it for 20 gil. You can then return to Edea's House and get another one. Take it to another store, and sell it again. Repeat for an endless amount of gil! You can gain an extra 10,000 gil in about the same time that you can lose that amount, or more, of SeeD paycheck!

Needless to say, whoever found these should have kept them to themselves instead of market them as good tips. I haven't found a single bigger waste of time in the entire game thus far, although actually writing this comes in at a close second.

For those of you want to know how to really get a nearly infinite amount of gil, you might want to check out our Item Trading page for the details (also covered above).
