It was beginning to get dark outside, the streetlights had come
on. We were speeding along and I thought I better remind my Auntie jee to turn on the headlights of the car. I looked up at
her and Yikes! Her eyes were closed. This was serious. “Auntie Jee, Auntie jee open your eyes, wake up!” I screeched shaking her arm.
She turned to face me claiming quite calmly, “My other eye is open.”
My heart was pounding, “Sheesh you really frightened me that time Auntie jee. How about
you drive with both eyes open from now on.”
Letting go of the steering wheel, she said to me quite sweetly,
"You can drive." I grabbed the steering wheel
of a going 75mph-in-a-45mph zone on the highway car. This was the first time I had ever tried to steer a moving vehicle,
so was quite nervous and scared, but quite surprisingly, the wheel didn't really need holding - it was on auto-pilot
(or on WahPilot as my Auntie Jee would
have put it). Auntie
Jee suddenly said quite excitedly, "Oh, I have to show you a wonderful story written by a young TruthLover
in my saakhi class!”
While saying that, she started going through her bag which contained enough material to run a small Gurudwara.
She fished out a piece of paper and stuck it under my nose ... "Read this!" she commanded. So keeping one eye on the road, one eye on the
transcript and my third eye on my auntie jee, I read:
The Khalsa Warriors
There was a small island called GurRus. On GurRus,
evil was forming. Five people decided to obey Maya. This gave her power over all the land. With her five evils,
which were now monsters, she had control of the five regions of GurRus. The rivers were green with envy. The sky was black with anger. The forests were yellow with pride. The huge lake was gray with attachment. The
jungle fruits were red with lust. All
the poor people were under Maya’s enticement. Very few villages were free
from her curse. God knew He should let everyone learn at their own speed. But, He could send helpers who were wining the game.
He sent five warriors, each with an arm band, flowing hair, small dagger, a small comb, and decent clothes.
The small city of Visakhie experienced a strange sight. A ball of light formed right in their foggy habitat. The ball
of light turned into a small red pebble which soon became a person. Then this
person drew out his shining khanda. He had a puggrie (on his head) made of an unusual orange cloth nobody had seen
before. This was a magnificent blessing for the people, because they
had no idea about God’s “helpers”. One person, brave enough
to reach into a lion’s mouth, stepped up to this being and asked, “Who
are you?”
The man simply said, “I am Naam Warrior. I’m here to make the skies blue again.”
In another near-by city named Nanak, another light appeared. When it formed into a person
and was approached, it replied,
“I am Pink Elephant Warrior,
here to make the fruits colorful again!” as she drew out a beautiful
rabab.
Like wise, in the City of Love, another light appears to make the forests green again.
And when asked, “Who are you?” it replied, “I am Warrior of Night!” and took out his black bow and golden arrows. Warrior of Day landed in the City of
Purity to make the lake clean again. She was the twin of Warrior of Night and had a golden bow with black arrows.
And nearby, a city called Eternity was blessed with the purest light of WahWarrior. He did not take out his weapon for he said that the time was
not right.
Maya shivered when she sensed the powerful presence of The Source Force. “The White Flame is here.” She growled, “Kaam! Krodh! Lobh! Moh, Hunkar!* Descend
from me NOOOOOW!” Her
evil eyes dripped with blood and she detached a small piece from her bone necklace and turned it into a black rotting snake
which slithered its putrid body with evil joy. “Make sure to destroy The Source!”
In each of the cities raged a fierce storm as the evils came to their domains. The Khalsa Warriors were ready. The Naam Warrior, the Pink Elephant Warrior,
the Warrior
of Day and the
Warrior of Night drew their weapons higher still and the WahWarrior remained in ultimate poise and ready for action. Fearlessly
looking in the direction of evil’s domain, they were transported to their sight.
Each one stood where they could see the entire city. Each one on a *cliff* yet perfectly steady with
no chance of falling off....

By this time I had forgotten all about driving, but luckily
my Auntie jee had taken over the wheel -Whew! - "That was some story Auntie jee where is the rest
of it?” I
asked.
“Oh don’t worry i think he has plans to write another
part,” Auntie
jee replied, “He
wouldn’t just leave us hanging with out a conclusion. I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.”
“Fine,” I grumbled, (I hate cliff hangars how come nobody can ever finish their stories.) I looked out the window,
we were nearly home. I saw the neon Afford Auto Dealer sign blinking. Excursions, Explorers, Expeditions
and Navigators, I thought to myself, wouldn’t I just love to be behind the wheels of one
of those - where no 12 something has gone before- I sighed.
EeeerrrrRRRRR. My auntie hung a hard right and pulled into the
car lot, “How’d
you like to take one of those for a test drive beta?”
“Oh Auntie jee YES let’s do!!!” My big sister piped up, and we jumped out almost before Auntie came to a stop…
“Oh sure easy for her she’s got a license.” I pouted.
“Young man my nephew here would like to test drive your
newest biggest fastest model,” my Auntie announced to the salesperson.
“No Problem mam, how about this one.” He said boosting me up to sit behind the wheel
of the biggest gas guzzler in the place. It was rotating on a mirrored platform with coloured lights flashing one after the
other all along the edge. With my hands on the wheel and the dashboard all lit up, and my reflection shimmering in the huge
plate glass display windows through which I could see the cars zooming by on the lit up street outside, I could just about
imagine that I was really driving.
“You look just like you’re a pilot on the Sachkhand
Express,” my
auntie nodded her approval. My sister jumped in beside me and the salesman helped Auntie jee into the back seat. Sis slipped
a CD into the CD player, rolled the electric windows up and pushed play. “Waheguru waheguru
waheguru” the
entire vehicle was exploding with naam vibrations. I had the biggest grin on my face. I felt just like a beautiful person
full of naam. My auntie sure was full of surprises. All of a sudden I just couldn’t wait for morning to come. I couldn’t
wait to see Yoda Singh and tell him how I felt inside. I wished he was here right beside me. I looked in the review mirror
and was completely amazed to see him sitting up, stretching like he’d been napping in the booster seat in the way back.
“So what do you think sakhi?” Yoda asked “Want to take this to the smagham next weekend? I especially need someone
to help me stay awake when I ‘m driving long distance. I understand you’re pretty good that way.” I was just speechless “Well,.”
He turned to the salesman, “We’ll take her. Let’s
get her on the road and get this boy home, he’s got a long morning ahead of him.”
