Collie
A large beautiful dog originally bred to drive cattle and herd sheep. There are 2 varieties, smooth-coated and rough-coated. The smooth collie has a flat close-lying coat of short hair. The rough collie, the more popular one, has a furry undercoat and harsh heavy outercoat everywhere but the legs and head. There are 4 types of coloring: black, white, & tan; sable & white; blue merle, which is an unusual mixture of blue, gray, & black; and white with sable, black or tan markings. The collie's ancestors were brought to the British Isles in the 1st century B.C. by invading Romans and were bred with native dogs. By the 16th century, collies were trained for herding and driving sheep and cattle. Colonists brought collies to America for use as working dogs. They are now popular pets.
