A small white spaniel that was kept as a lap-dog by aristocratic ladies in ancient Greece and Rome. The Maltese is one of the oldest breeds of dog and is often mentioned in ancient poetry and essays. Its well proportioned body is covered with extremely long, silky, white hair, which completely hides the legs and extremely dark eyes rimmed with black. It is a striking show dog and makes an excellent pet, especially for apartment dwellers.
