Chow Chow
A massive powerful dog and the only breed that always had a blue-black tongue. The chow chow has a wooly coat with large ruff around the neck. The coat is usually red, but it may be any solid color. The chow's head is large, wide and lionlike, with pointed upright ears and almond-shaped eyes. The bushy tail curls over the back. In North America the chow has been bred primarily as a show dog and to some extent as a pet. In China, where the breed originated more than 2,000 years ago, it is used as a guard and hunting dog. It makes a good guard dog because it is alert and wary of strangers. As a hunter, the chow possesses great speed and stamina. It hunts by scent and points out the quarry.
