Pekingese
A breed of toy dog with a shortened foreface, bulging eyes, and drooping heart-shaped ears. The long silky coat may be a solid color or combinations of red, fawn, black, or white. There is a ruff of hair around the chest and shoulders, and feather hair grows on the ears, legs, and high-set tail, which is carried to one side. Sometimes there is a black mask around the eyes. The Pekingese originated in China, and it is one of the oldest dog breed, dating back at least to the 8th century A.D. For a long time the dogs were considered sacred in China. Only members of the royal family could own a Pekingese, and stealing a dog was punishable by death. Pekingese were brought to the Western world by the British, who found four dogs when they invaded the Imperial Palace in the 1860's.Despite their small size, Pekingese have great stamina. They are easy to care for, and they make good pets.In recent years they have been among the ten most popular dogs in the United States.
