This 24 hours moderate gales & fair
weather. Yesterday at ½ past one in the afternoon the Worster came up with the chase
being Ten Sweeds under the Convoy of one Man of War of 50 guns, the Worster fired one Gun
to bring him too & another to strike his topsaile, he brought too but did not strike
and gavve the Worster att the 2nd Gun fireing a whole broad Side. The Worster returned it with his & so he did the like with the
Winchester, Dover, LItchfield & New Castle. Then I came up with him & gave him my
Larboard broad Side wich he return:d with his, I the same time Tacked & gave him the
other & their had (?) a broad Side of him engagd for an hour & half.
The Rigging being shott I could not command the Ship, so she
shott a little ahead that I could not bring a Gun to bear on him. I gott off my Torn Sheet
& stood till I gott my Ropes in order which was in half an hour. I then takt again
& ordered my Lieut. to gett 50 men to board him but he then struck.
I lost two men killed and eight more wounded, our Sails &
Rigging much shattered and severall Shott in our Hull, two topm. shott and unserviceable.
Att ½ past four he stroke and we knotted & spliced our Rigging and [?] another For
Sayle & Main Topsaile. This morning we saw a Fleet of Ships & WNW we stood.
