"My Last Breath"

by Evanescence

Hold on to me love
You know I can't stay long
All I wanted to say was
I love you and I'm not afraid

Can you hear me?
Can you feel me in your arms
Holding my last breath?
Safe inside myself
Are all my thoughts of you

Sweet rapture and life,
It ends here tonight.

Mark and Angelina had been married for a few years, when Angelina fell ill. She had gone to several doctors. They found out she had a rare disease, to which there was no cure. The doctors did all they could, but it wasn't enough. They finally realized she would just slowly die.

One night, when Angelina felt her weakest, she laid in Mark's arms, wishing she didn't have to leave him. "I love you, Mark." "I love you, too, Angel." "I don't want to leave you here alone, but I am not afraid to die." He laid his hand on her cheek, and softly kissed her. "When you pass on, I won't be alone. You will still be in my heart."

A tear slid from the corner of her eye when she closed them. She released her final breath, then went limp in his arms. "Angel?" When he got no answer, he shook her a little. "Angelina?" He wrapped his arms tightly around her, as tears welled up in his eyes.

I'll miss the winter
A world of fragile things
Look for me in the white forest
Hiding in a hollow tree

I know you hear me,
I can taste it in your tears.
Holding my last breath
Safe inside myself
Are all my thoughts of you.

Sweet rapture and life,
It ends here tonight.

Months came and went, until winter came, leaving a light coat of white over everything. Mark had gone out to the stables, to take care of Demon, his stallion, and Goddess, Angelina's mare. That's when he saw the door to Goddess' stall open. "Damn it." He put his saddle on Demon, then went to find the mare.

He rode through the field, searching through the trees when he didn't see her in the open area. "Mark." He heard the faint whisper of his name. When he turned to look, he saw nothing. "Mark." He looked around again. His jaw dropped. "It can't be..." He caught a glimpse of Angelina through the trees. He followed her, as she went deeper into the trees.

"Angelina," he called out. But she didn't stop. She turned, going out of his sight. He continued through the trees, until he reached a clearing. There, he found Goddess grazing on what little grass was left. He dismounted, and went to the center of the clearing. He turned around to look for Angelina again, but didn't see her. "Angelina?" His chest heaved, as he fell to his knees in the snow. A single tear slid from his eye. He felt lips on his cheek, where the tear seemed to stop. "I am always with you, remember, Mark?" "I miss you, Angel." "I'm right here, my love," he heard. It felt as if someone had laid their hand on his heart. "Don't cry for me. I am with you."

Closing your eyes
You pray your dreams will leave you here,
But still you wake and know the truth -
No one's there.

Say goodnight, don't be afraid
Calling me, holding me, as you fade to black.

(Say goodnight) Holding my last breath
(Don't be afraid) Safe inside myself
(Holding me) Are my thoughts of you
Sweet rapture and life,
It ends here tonight.

He went to bed that night, wishing he would never wake up. When he finally fell asleep, he dreamed of Angelina and the clearing where he talked to her that day. That same clearing was where they made love for the first time.

Angelina seemed to be dancing to music only she could hear, as alive and energetic as when they were first married. "Come dance with me, Mark." "I can't dance." "Oh, come on. It's only you and me. I promise not to laugh." He stood from where he was laying on the ground, wrapped his arms around her, and slowly moved with her. "For someone who doesn't know how to, you're doing a good job." "Maybe I should have given you a dance at our wedding." "When we are together again, you can give me one." He wrapped his arms tighter around her.

He awoke, and rolled toward her side of the bed, expecting to find her. When he didn't see her, he squeezed his eyes shut, and tried to go back to sleep. After laying awake for an hour, he decided to get out of bed, and make some coffee. When he stood from the bed, he was hit with a bout of vertigo. He sat down on the edge of the bed, and waited for it to pass. He tried to stand again, but it hit him again, this time his stomach seemed to be clenched in a fist, and pain wracked his body.

He got dressed, and decided to see the doctor. He explained to the doctor what had happened to him. The doctor checked him out, but couldn't find anything wrong with him. "Go home and get some rest, Mark. If you experience it again in the morning, come back." "Alright, doc."

Months later, he was finally diagnosed as having the same disease that killed Angelina. By then, it was too late to even try to save him. He laid in bed, knowing he was in his final hours. "Angelina, I'm coming to be with you." "Mark." He turned to see where the voice came from. He saw Angelina standing beside the bed. She laid down beside him, and he took her into his arms. "Say goodnight, and don't be afraid." "Goodnight, Angel." He closed his eyes, and released his last breath.

When he awoke, he was in the clearing. He looked around, and found Angelina dancing by herself. "Why am I here?" "Don't be afraid. We are here, because this is a special place for both of us." "Am I..." "We're together again. Forever, this time." She sat on her knees beside him. "You owe me a dance, my love." Mark reached up, and pulled her down to kiss her. When it ended, he said, "I'll dance with you for an eternity."
