Would You Like to Dance?
It was a Saturday night, and everyone was going out to the club.
I really wasn't in the mood to go out dancing. The last thing I needed was some big lug stepping on my toes while he tried
to keep up with the song.
I broke up with my long-term boyfriend over six months ago. Everyone tried fixing me up with friends,
or their boyfriend's friends. None of the guys "did it" for me. I wanted someone special. Someone with brains, brawn, charm
and wit. My friends said I set my standards too high.
Getting back to Saturday, my friend, Debbie, was trying to talk me into going to Night Moves (a local
three-clubs-in-one place). "Maybe you'll find someone for a fling," she had teased. A fling wasn't what I was looking for.
"No thanks." "If nothing else, you need to get out, and have some fun. You need to do something besides go to work, and lay
in bed watching wrestling." "Why not? Atleast then, I'm gauranteed to see a good looking man in my bedroom." "You have a choice.
Either you get dressed and put on some make up, or I'm dragging you out there as is." "I'm sure I'd pick up a lot of guys
in this robe." "Depends on if it comes open," she laughed. "Alright, alright," I said with a sigh. "I'll go." She knew that
I would cheer up as soon as we got there.
An hour later, we were standing in line, waiting to get in. Debbie nudged me. "Look at the ass on that
one." I looked, but wasn't interested. The guy looked like a toothpick. I heard some people step up behind us, and I turned
around to look at them. It was two big guys. I nudged her. "Look at the long haired one with the cowboy hat," I whispered.
I had just glanced the first time, so I looked again. "Oh, my God! That's Bradshaw!" I whispered.
"It's actually John." I must have whispered too loud. "Um, sorry about that. My name's Jade," I said
as I stuck my hand out. He took my hand, and shook it. "Nice to meet you," he said with a smile. "It's nice to meet you, too."
Debbie and I stepped up to the i.d. booth. We paid the cover charge, and had shown the attendant our i.d.s. "I hope to see
you inside," I said, as we walked in.
"Oh, God. Did I sound desperate?" "Maybe, just a little," she laughed. "I just made a jack ass out
of myself in front of one of the hottest men ever!" "Don't be so hard on yourself. Besides, it looks like he's checking you
out." I looked around. When our eyes met, he tipped his hat. I just smiled and waved at him. I looked at the guy walking with
him, who seemed to be looking at something, or someone, around me. "Don't look now, but I think Mr. Austin is checking you
out."
"Austin!?" "Yeah. Ol' Stevie seems to have eyes for you." "Stone Cold!?" "Do you know another Steve
Austin?" She jumped, and squeeled. "Calm down, before he thinks you're an idiot," I laughed.
We went to the bar, which was in Renegades (the "kicker" club) and ordered our drinks. After the bartender
brought our drinks, someone behind us said, "add a couple Budweisers to that, and I'll pay." "Are you two following us," I
asked. "Nope, just wanted a beer." "That's awfully funny, since you passed three beer tubs to go to the only bar here." "Ok,
we're caught," he said with a smile. "May I take this seat?" "Go right ahead. So, what brings you out, besides the beer?"
"I thought I'd give dancing another try. 'The worm' ain't my kind of dancing. I'd rather do the Two Step. What about you?"
"My friend here thought I should do something besides sit around watching wrestling."
The bartender brought them their beers, and John paid for all four drinks. "Thank you for the drink."
"It's my pleasure, but if you want to pay me back, you could dance with me after we finish." "I'd love to." I tried to gulp
down my drink as fast as possible. By the time I was done, he still had half a bottle left. A waitress was walking by with
a tray of jell-o shots. I grabbed four, and paid for them. I passed them out among us, and said, "let's have a good evening,
folks. Bottoms up!" I ate the jell-o, none too daintily. "You'd better slow down, girl, or I'll be carrying you to the car."
I laughed and said, "I won't get another drink for awhile."
Beside me, I heard Debbie and Steve hitting it off pretty well. She deserved to be happy, and as long
as it wasn't with my brother, I was happy for her. She'd been through a lot of shit herself. One divorce, a shitty family,
quitting school because of death threats... It was about time something good happened for her.
They walked out to the dance floor, leaving John and me alone. We sat there, exchanging small talk,
until John Connelly's "Common Man" came on. "Come on, cowboy. We're dancing now." "Yes, ma'am!"
As we were dancing, he started singing the song:
I'm a common man
Drive a common van
My dog ain't got a pedigree
If I had my say
I'm gonna stay that way
Cause high-priced people lose their sanity
And, a common man is what I'll be
"Have you ever thought of quitting wrestling to become a singer?" "No. I don't think I could
draw a crowd," John laughed. "A handsome man, with a voice like that... I bet you could." "Ok. Let's test your idea. Let's
go into the Purple Parrot, and sing." "You want me to do kareoke?" "Why not?" "Cause I can't carry a tune," I lied. I had
plenty of solos in choir at school. That's been awhile, though. "You probably haven't tried."
He talked me into it. We went in, and told the d.j. what we wanted to sing. He went first.
Looking back, on the memory of
The dance we shared, beneath the stars above
For a moment, all the world was right
How could I have known, that you'd ever say goodbye
And I... I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives, are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain, but I'd a had to miss the dance
Holding you, I held everything
For a moment, wasn't I the king?
But if I'd only known, how the king would fall
And who's to say?
You know, I might have changed it all
And, I... I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives, are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain, but I'd a had to miss the dance
Yes, my life, it's better left to chance
I could have missed the pain, but I'd a had to miss the dance
When he came off the stage, I told him that he did a great job. I was up next.
Oooo come on, come on
Come on, come on
Didn't I make you feel
Like you were the only man?
Didn't I give you nearly everything
That a woman possibly can?
Honey, you know I did!
And, each time I tell myself,
Well I think I've had enough
But I'm gonna show you, baby,
That a woman can be tough
I want you to come on,
Come on, come on, come on
And take it
Take another little piece of my heart, now, baby
Break it!
Break another little piece of my heart
I know, yeah, yeah, yeah
Have a...
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby
You know you've got it
If it makes you feel good
Oh, yes indeed
You're out on the streets
Looking good
And, baby, deep down in your heart
I guess you know that it ain't right
Hear me when I cry
Baby, and I cry all the time
Each time I tell myself
Well, I can't stand the pain
But when you hold me in your arms
I'm singing once again.
I said come on, come on, come on, come on,
And take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby
Break it!
Break another little piece of my heart
I know you will
Have a...
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby
Well you know you've got it
Shout if it makes you feel good
(repeat)
(repeat, again)
John picked me up from the stage, and set me on the floor. "You sounded just like Joplin." "Is
that good or bad," I laughed. "You were great." "Well, thank you." He came down, and kissed me softly on the lips. The small
kiss gave me a dizzying effect, and it looked like it did the same to him.
"My turn to pick. Let's go over to "Aliens". That's more my speed." "You like that techno crap?" "Some
of it. It's easier to dance to."
We went to that area, and one of my favorite songs was on.
All the boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey
Girls say, girls say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey
Hey baby, baby
Hey baby, hey baby, hey
Boys say, boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey
All the boys get the girls in the back
I laid my hand on his shoulder, and started moving to the song. He started to warm up to the
song, and move along with me. He grabbed my hips, and we started grinding together. He brushed the hair away from my ear,
and whispered, "we need to stop. You're making me hot." "I'll stop right after you do," I replied with a big smile. He didn't
stop until the song was over.
"Let's go find Steve and your friend." "Ok." We went back over to "Renegades", and found them in the
middle of the dance floor. After the song had finished, Tone Loc's version of "Wild Thing" came blaring over the speakers.
Debbie looked at me, and said, "wanna do the routine?" "You know it!" "What routine?" John and Steve asked together. "Make
space, and watch," we replied.
We turned our backs to them. We stood side by side in front of our respective partner, and weaved our
knees in and out as we went down to the ground. Once our hands hit the ground, we spread into push-up position. With one hand
holding us up, and the other on our backsides, we immitated sexual thrusts. We turned over to face them, then got on our knees.
We slowly crawled up their bodies. We stuck a hand in the waistband of their jeans, and immitated riding a bucking bronco.
He grabbed my hips, and brought me closer to him.
"Do you always have a partner for this?" "Usually." I looked down at his crotch. "And, I see it had
the same effect on you." "I could see why you'd get a 'rise' out of your partner." I stood on my toes, and whispered in his
ear, "but, I never want to leave with them. You on the other hand..."
He turned to Steve. "We're outta here. Do you mind riding with Debbie?" "Nix that idea," I interrupted.
"We came in my Camaro, and I'm not leaving without it." "You don't trust my driving?" Debbie whined. "Hell no! How many tickets
do you have right now?" "Point taken."
John handed Steve the keys to the rental, and we told them goodnight. He looked funny trying to cramp
himself into the passenger seat of the car. Soon after we were off. "Do you mind going to my house," I asked him. "As long
as there's a bed and a shower, I don't care where we go." He laid his hand on my inner thigh. I fought my leg's urge to jump,
like a dog's when you scratch it's belly. His hand slowly moved along my thigh. I wondered what his hand would feel like against
my thigh, when I shed the jeans.
"Slow down, or we won't make it anywhere," he said, interrupting my thoughts. I looked at the speedometer,
and it said 70. The speed limit was 40. 'Shit' I thought to myself. I slowed the car down.
His hand was still moving along my thigh. I stilled his hand, and he gently squeezed the flesh through
the denim. "John, if you don't stop that, I'll have to pull over. Bed be damned!" He let out a chuckle, and squeezed my thigh
again. It was still for the rest of the ride.
Once we got to the house, and were inside, I asked him if he wanted anything to drink. "No, thanks."
He came up behind me, as I was setting my keys on the kitchen table. He wrapped his arms around me, and came down to nuzzle
my neck. I turned to putty, when his teeth grazed my shoulder. He licked, sucked and nibbled his way to my ear. "I want you,"
he whispered.
I turned in his arms, and laid my hands flat on his muscled chest. His lips came down upon mine in
a tender kiss. His tongue traced my lips, and I opened for him. Our tongues danced together, as his hands roamed over my body.
They slid down until he cupped my bottom, and he ground his erection against me. When the kiss ended, I said, "let's go to
the bedroom."
He followed me into the bedroom, where we slowly stripped each other. I hung his hat on the bedpost,
and ran my fingers through his long black hair. He kissed me with such furious passion that I became weak in the knees. He
picked me up, and we fell to the bed with him on top of me. I moaned as he slowly entered me. He kept a slow pace as he slid
in and out of me. He placed kisses all over my face, neck, and anywhere he could reach.
I locked my legs with his, and raised my hips to meet his thrusts. I ran my hands over his back, and
kneaded his flesh. "Oh, John..." He wrapped his arms around me, and flipped onto his back, taking me with him. He sat up against
the headboard, as I rode him. I wrapped my arms around his neck, and stared into his eyes. His arms went around me, then he
claimed my lips. Our moans mingled as our lips parted to deepen the kiss. He held me tighter as we went over the edge together.
As the kiss ended, I stared at him. The look in his eyes told me this was more than a fling. "You are
amazing, John." He chuckled. "The same could be said about you." I laid down beside him, and he took me in hi arms. I fell
asleep with my head laying on his chest.
Fifty-two years and three children later, as our old, withered bodies lay down for the night,
I feel my life drawing to a close. A tear slides from the corner of my eye. I don't want to leave him, but the Lord calls
me to join him.
"What's the matter, Jade?" he asks me. "I won't be here in the morning. I know I'm going to die tonight."
He takes me in his arms. "Just know that when you pass, I'll be right behind you."
I lay there, with my head on his chest. Another tear slides from my eye, and drops on his chest. An
old song comes to mind, and I start to sing it to him, modified to come from a woman.
If tomorrow never comes
Will he know how much I loved him
Did I try in every way,
To show him everyday,
That he's my only one
And, if my time on earth were through
And, he must face this world without me,
Is the love I gave him in the past
Gonna be enough to last
If tomorrow never comes
I close my eyes, and fall asleep. When my eyes open, I see the pearly gates of Heaven before
me. As I get up from the cloud I lay upon, I stare at the gates. I walk toward the gates, and reach to push them open. "Wait!"
I turn to look behind me. "John?" His arms come around me. "I told you I would be right behind you." He takes my hand in his,
and we push the gates open together.
The End
