They’ve raised the cross in Shanksville
Notes of grief and remembrance written
On this beam from the heart
of sorrow.
A pentagon now encircled by rectangles of pain.
Benches pointing to the epicenters of destruction;
Death at the
US Pentagon building remembered.
Here, where the towers fell
There is nothing.
Only promises enshrined in mud.
Ground Zero is off limits.
Fences
impenetrable and police barricades
Keep us out.
I cry, clutching my rose
As I walk this perimeter of emptiness.
As once I had in the days soon after the holocaust.
It
was a mile of tears
Still is…
Our only memorial
Is in our hearts.
