What see we now
As we walk the plaza
That once was a killing field,
That crashed our serenity to the ground?
So peaceful this space!
But the minds eye
Sees the ghosts of the dead
Rise from that horrible day.
Can we not escape
Destruction lurking in shadows?
Video images of children
Fleeing Mideast destruction flashes by.
What see we now
As we view the reconstruction,
The soaring buildings on this open plaza
That once was a pile of dirt?
Huge structures
Touching the sky.
Trees and grass covering dust and rubble
Waterfalls, a train station entry, a museum,
now stand.
Terrorists claim lives
Beyond this calm site.
In far corners of the globe death and destruction,
Other piles of dirt where homes once stood.
What see we now
When standing
At the very top of the tallest building,
WTC1, now the sentinel for this site?
A clear sky,
Fluffy clouds,
A magnificent view of this land of the
free.
But what lies beyond these shores?
Do we see now
That 9/11 is not over?
That the terrorists beyond our door
Eventually will try to blast our world
to cinders?
