This phrase in our circle includes everything from ritual robes and gowns to the costumes worn to local renaissance festivals. (Scarborough Faire, TRF and Ravenswood) Some of us are dressed in simple pagan/wiccan attire others go out for a more fanciful or elegant look, as seen in the periods stretching from the early to mid-sixteenth century until the mid to late-eighteenth century. The more ornate of the costumes are usually tailored but some of us sew our own. The simplest pagan/wiccan gowns which can be made by anyone with a minimum of sewing expertise is as follows: Measure yourself from the top of your shoulder to the floor. Double this number and add two inches. This is the amount of cloth you will need. For a gown which will really flow with your movements go for a 45" nap, or for "full figured" pagans, a 6O" nap. Fold the material in half, and begin to stitch the sides. To avoid trailing ends which can trip you in ceremony, you may even cut a swooping taper into the bottom edges, which leaves them slit up the sides a ways and shows a bit of calf. Be certain to leave several inches open at the top for your arms. When you finish the sides, as you decide best suits you, cut a hole for your head, start fairly small, a tight fit can always be adjusted, a loose one cannot. At this point you can slip it on and measure how large a hole you want for your head opening. Then hem the head-hole and hem the bottom of the gown, side slits if you opt for them, and you are finished. If you are comfortable enough to show some leg, or it is hot in your area, you may want to make the gown much shorter. (Measure from the point you want it to reach, to your shoulder as above.) If you want it to look more "fitted" go for a smaller nap, add darts to your stitching or belt it with a simple silver chain, or belt, at the waist. Personally I recommend you only use natural fibers as they are more appropriate and also more comfortable in most climates.
