Oils have many uses for the average witch, some are used pure and others blended for a specific magickal use. Some of the more common uses are:
There are also many oils and blends, which may be used for more than one purpose. The power of the blend is in the direct ratio of the specific oils for a set magickal purpose. Information about the properties of individual oils abound. You may even find recipes for blends in many places; though the Internet, through books, through covens, etc. Be certain when using a recipe that you follow the measurements exactly to attain the best response from the oils. Also be certain when using oils to use the correct amount of cutter in each of these recipes. If you do not you may find that a skin irritation will occur as some of these are very powerful oils. Be certain before using, or allowing other people to use any oils that you prepare, that any oils or blends which are to come in contact with a person's skin are pre-tested on a small patch of skin first. Watch for irritation, burning, itching etc. If the oil or blend seems too strong, use more cutter to dilute it again. This may save the discomfort and/or embarrassment of walking around for several days after using it with raw irritated patches of skin. (This is experience talking... In the earliest days of our coven, after a particular ritual calling for foreheads to be anointed, a majority of the covenors walked around for two days or more with everything from solar crosses and pentacles to christian crosses and triple goddess symbols "itched" and burned into their skins. Some oils are extremely caustic and can do damage with just a trace amount in blends. Always err on the side of caution) If a specific cutter is not called for in the recipe, then sweet almond oil is the best choice in my opinion. It is very lightly scented, has a pleasant feel to it, and can be easily located. Virgin olive oil may be used as well, and is specified in many recipes I have found. If you do not have either of these on hand, we have discovered that in a pinch, sunflower oil is a worthy substitute, but has rather a more greasy feel to it than we prefer. An example of a blend used for the body is Witch's Oil.
