When we first began to practice we had a few books and basic tools but very little else. We have over the years, built up a fairly well stocked library as well as quite a collection of tools. This is a list of the tools our coven uses most often and the ways in which we have chosen to use them. Some were purchased from stores, many were made by us, a couple were even purchased from garage sales. Chalice- used during ritual to hold our wine or beverage of whatever type, used in the symbolic "GREAT RITE" as the symbolic Goddess in leiu of the actual performance of that ritual. Athame- used as our magical knife and during rituals as the symbol of the God if performing the "GREAT RITE" symbolically and used in some spellwork, double-edged blades which are kept dull, they typically have black handles used to symbolize fire at our altar. Boline- used for herb and flower gathering and for cutting food or inscribing other ritual items white handled and typically with a curved sharp blade (although mine is straight-edged). Broom- used for the clearing away of negativity for the circle and even the entire house or ritual area. Cauldron- used for scrying, brews, burning parchment, mixing ingredients etc, made of metal and larger at it's belly than at it's neck, used to symbolize water at our altar. Censer- used to burn herbs, chemicals, incense, written spells etc.can be made of many different things, some are metal some are ceramic, some are glass. Wand- can also be used for marking the circle Depending on the reason for the ritual we also use it for calling the quarters used to symbolize air at our altar. Stang- stands behind the outside altar and is decorated according to the holiday or reason for the ritual. Book of Shadows- used as our storage place for the spells, rituals, information, invocations and poems or songs to the God and Goddess, Guardians of the Circle, Fey, etc., Az even included written "scripts" for our more complicated rituals. Copies, may then, be printed for all those involved with the ritual or even those simply attending as watchers. The participants may memorize their parts or just read from the script during the ritual if they need to do so. Az included various font sizes and styles to make reading easier on those unfamiliar with the ceremonies, especailly when we are in a ceremony outdoors as the lighting can be "iffy" at times. Sword- used to draw the boundries of the circle and to open and close the circle so that people may exit/enter the circle. It is used in the calling of the guardians when it is done by the H.P. and H.P.ess. Pentacle- used as a protective piece in the circle and used to place items upon before consecration, used to symbolize earth at our altar. Bell- used to invoke the goddess and also to mark out the beginning and end of spells, also to ward our circle from evil entities and evil energies.
