I have heard from many different sources the "Proper Way" to mirror. The way which works best for me is to enter a room which can be totally blacked out. (A small bathroon at night is best for obvious reasons)
Light one or two small candles and place them beside and/or under a mirror. It should be just enough light to give you a somewhat dreamy appearance, but still let you see your reflection clearly. I personally set a small mirror on the floor so that I may sit and be comfortable for any length of time. The mirror is angled so that only the head and shoulders are visible in the beginning. (As you advance it becomes easier to remain focused even though there are drastic body changes going on.) I sit cross-legged on the floor and begin to concentrate on the eyes. Mainly because they are so obviously different in each face. Eyes are amazing, they are truly the windows to the soul or incarnation of the time as I believe.
Allow yourself to blink naturally, if you are of a skitish nature in the beginning, you might allow your eyes to unfocus SLIGHTLY, until you sense that all movement and change in the mirror has stopped, then allow them to refocus, try not to be frightened if the change is drastic. I know I am a great one to talk, but it is really an amazing experience and nothing to be feared. With this, as in all things, keep reminding yourself that you have the power. Nothing can harm you unless you allow it.
It is an odd feeling to watch something as familiar as your own face become totally alien and unfamiliar to you, you really should try it.
