Here in our metroplex we have a small graveyard on a two lane, gravel topped road which has been popular for years. It is called the "Faerie Lights Cemetary". I first heard about it about in the early '80, when I met a guy who lived up the road from it. He said the local people told his parents about it when they bought their home there six years before. The stories say that for the past several decades the lights will appear to some people, but not to all. Locals all seem to end up seeing them eventually, if they live close enough for a long enough time, usually a few months or more. This is a popular cemetary for gravestomps, but we have had groups where some saw the lights, other times the people we were with thought we were crazy, but one thing I have noticed, the more spiritual the person, the more likely they are to see the fey's lights. The least likely to see the lights are those people whose dogma prevents them from having an open mind. The last gravestomp we took to the " Faerie Lights Cemetary " the entire party was made up of not only pagans and wiccans and druids but also people who were new to the study of the craft, and seeking out some ofrm of spirituality that made sense to them. There was no-one that night who did not see the lights. The standard practice for this cemetary, is to go when there is no moon or very little moon. The reasoning being that this rules out the possibility of reflected moonlight being the cause of the sightings. We go late at night, this rules out headlight reflection (not that there is much traffic there anyway on the back roads) and also the possibility that one of the houses in the distance has lights which are reflecting on the headstones. These are all just for the benefit of the sceptical who do see the lights for the first time and for those who don't see them at all. Those who do see them can tell you that they aren't caused by any kind of reflection of anything. The lights appear as flames and are about the same shade of blue that you see in an acetelyne torch, that light and yet bright glowing blue. It is brilliant an almost neon blue shade which seems to be about 3 or 4 inches in height. You see them from a distance but when you approach the spot where they were...they aren't there any longer. They will appear behind you somewhere instead. They show up on empty plots and filled plots alike. No reason or rhyme to the placement of the sightings can be discovered. In the past we have tried to out think them but it has yet to work. We have begun in the center of the cemetary as a group all facing out toward the lights. They always seem to be just 20 or 30 steps away lightly scattered thoughout the area. We began to count off steps away from the center, one step for each number. By the time thirty was reached we turned and looked back toward the center since most of the ones in front of us were either gone or still several yards away. Lo and behold they were several behind us now and no-one could admit to having passed them and they had not visibly passed us. The last time we went to "Faerie Lights" I stood still with a couple of people and tried to direct two of the others toward the lights. We had them circling around behind the lights in an attempt to sneak up on them. (" No... No! Go back about another ten feet and THEN come back toward us about fifteen feet. Almost there, Almost there, Almost AAARRRGGGHHH !!!!! DON'T STEP ON IT !!!) It seems that we are able to see them from a distance still, and yet Nightshade with his size 13 clodhoppers couldn't see it while two feet in front of him. From where we were it glowed as brightly as ever but he was looking right down upon it as he loomed over it, and couldn't see a thing but the empty plot he stood on. Meanwhile others of the party were elsewhere in the cemetary doing their best to catch the Lights unaware, but no luck was had by Lysander, Azrael, or the others. No-one that I am aware of has ever gotten a close look at the elusive "Faerie Lights".
